To everything there is a season and a purpose for every time under heaven. There is a time to be born and a time to die. For Ian Alexander Andersen these times arrived in a sad order, and he entered the world having already left it. He was known only through his little motions, his kicks, and what to his mother felt like flips. In his movements and in his stillness, he caused arms to ache for him and hearts to break when they held him.

His name was chosen months before, and through it he teaches those he never met and those who loved him. The name Ian means “God is gracious,” and Alexander means “defender of men.” In his stillness Ian teaches that the only defense for men against death is the grace of God. The hope of this defense is that a Man rose from the dead and that God extends this grace to men. Those who loved him and long to hold him cling to this truth.

Ian leaves behind his parents Samuel and Rachel Andersen who love him and older siblings Nathaniel, Aletheia, and Hector who long to play with him. He is missed by grandparents Matthew and Beckie Andersen, Randy and Esther Bartels, Lucas and Saranya Moellers, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a beloved church family. Ian will be buried in Wadena, IA, at the feet of his great grandpa Richard Parler.

We shall go to him, but he shall not return to us. The LORD gives and the LORD takes away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.
