Virginia M. Gaffney, 85, of Lamont, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Virginia Mae Wink was born February 13, 1937, at home in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Albert Nelson and Letha Alberta (Hansel) Wink. In 1957, she graduated from West Delaware High School in Manchester, Iowa. On November 22, 1958, she was united in marriage to John Joseph Gaffney, Jr. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester.

This union was blessed with seven children: James Joseph, Jerry Lee, Mary, Margaret, Pam, David D. and Michael A. Virginia was a devoted homemaker and loving wife and mother. Virginia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point and the Lamont American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping, sewing, shopping, reading and making candy.

Virginia is survived by her 5 children: James “Joe” Gaffney of Lamont, Jerry Gaffney of Lamont, Mary (Leonard) Ritzman of Anamosa, Margaret (Duane) Landis of Arlington and Pam (Randy) Schmidtke of Lamont; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and one on the way; and sister: Judy Wink of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: John in 2006; 2 sons: Michael and David both at infancy; grandson: Aaron Ritzman; great grandson: Darren Gerdeman; great granddaughter: Keria; daughter-in-law: Deborah Gaffney; and brother: Everett Wink.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 19, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point, Iowa, with Rev. John Haugen officiating.

Visitation: 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Grace United Methodist Church in Lamont and for one hour before the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point on Monday.

Interment: St. Albert Cemetery, rural Dundee, Iowa.

Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home of Winthrop and Lamont is assisting the family.
