Sarah A. Shannon, 93, of Independence, IA died on Saturday July 17, 2021, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.

Sarah was born on July 18, 1927, in Freeborn, MN, the daughter of Newton D. and Ida (Klaassen) Zingg. In her early life, her family moved from Minnesota to a farm in rural Denver, IA, where attended the country school. For several years she helped her parents on their farm until she met John “Jack” Shannon, at the dance Hall in Denver, IA. On May 20, 1953, they were married in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, IA. Together they made their home in Independence, IA. There they raised their five children together. She worked briefly for Independence Produce, and Andrew’s Café. In 1975, they purchased the Bus Depot in Independence and ran it together until 1985.

Sarah enjoyed spending time outside. She was an avid flower gardener and loved campfires. She especially loved spending time hosting tea parties with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; Kathy Shannon, Independence, IA, Donald (Julie) Shannon, Ankeny, IA, Idamae (Larry) Mangrich, Independence, IA, Rosalyn (Dan) Hoveland, Winthrop, IA, and Glenn (Joyce) Shannon, Brandon, IA, eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, a brother Leonard Zingg, Phoenix, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Shannon, her parents, Newton and Ida Zingg, her brothers, John, Clarence, Don, Fred, George, Dutch “Irvin”, Orville Zingg, her sisters, Vera Kinney, Grace Woolsey, Annie Frickson, and Jeanette Price, two grand children and two great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday July 21, 2021, at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA with Rev. David Beckman Presiding. Burial will be held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Independence. Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7:30 PM on Tuesday July 20, 2021, at the Reiff Family Center - Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A Rosary will be said at 3:45 PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 on Tuesday.
