Mrs. George C. Hawley

Mrs. George C. Hawley died at her home in Lamont last Thursday morning, and was buried in the Campton cemetery Saturday forenoon. The funeral services were held in the M.E.church at Lamont, Rev. True preaching the service.

Mrs. Hawley was born in Canada but moved with her parents when quite young to Kane county, Ill. Her maiden name was Rilla Lake. She was married to the husband who survives her in February 1855, and in a few days thereafter moved to the home prepared for her by her husband in Richland township.

In 1854, G. C. Hawley, W. B. Smnith and E. S. Cowles purchased land adjoining each other on the highway between Lamont and Forestville, and the following year found all three of them with their young wives occupying these farms.
They were pioneers in that locality and were more than ordinarily intelligent and industrious people. For more than fifty years, from March 1855 until Oct. 1905, these six people were neighbors and close friends. Now there are but three of them left. Last October Mrs. Cowles died, the following month time ceased to be with Mrs. Smith, and last week Mrs. Hawley followed her friends to the realms of the hereafter. They who enjoyed each other's society as much daring live are three united spirits in death. The three husbands, who were young, ambitious men fifty years ago, and who worked and won for themselves good homes and honorable names are still with us. May the fates deal kindly with them until they pass on to join their companions of this life.

Mrs Hawley was a good woman a good neighbor and a good friend. Her life work is ended. It is a good pattern for the on-coming generation of the community where she lived.
