Judy Perry, of Dubuque, activist for disability rights and ally to the LGBTQ+ community, passed away August 11, 2018 at the age of 60.

Judy is survived by her husband, John Perry, and her kid, Indigo (Indy) Channing. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her son, Jacob, who was lost in a miscarriage.

She was born in December 15, 1957 in Aurora, Iowa and grew up on a farm in Rowley, where she spent her evening teaching the school lessons from the day to the cows - Judy would often reminisce that she had the most educated cows in Buchanan County. She graduated from Independence High School in 1976, then went on to Kirkwood Community College and Mount Mercy University, where she earned a degree in sociology and psychology.

On February 14, 1981 she married John Perry.

Judy loved God, loved others, and served the world. She could often be found in the downtown area, fellowshipping with the homeless people who lived in her neighborhood. Judy believed in the inherent worth and dignity of each person, and that recovery was possible. She spent her career in human services at Area Residential Care, and more recently at Hillcrest Family Services.

The events in downtown Dubuque were a passion of Judy's and she could often be seen at the Farmer's Market and various events at the Town Clock and Five Flags.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31st at Grand View United Methodist Church, followed by an after party at the Smokestack. All are welcome!

Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.
