Stella Marie Mazur, 92, of Johnston, Iowa and formerly of Rowley, IA died Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, Iowa.

Stella was born on February 4, 1925, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Margaret (Sullivan) Hertzberg. She attended the St. John’s Catholic Schools, graduating High School with the class of 1942. While in high school she played on the St. John’s Basketball Team that played in the State Girls Catholic Basketball Tournament. She was married to Joseph J. Mazur on June 8, 1943, in Waterloo, IA. Following her husband’s discharge from the army in 1945, the couple made their home on a farm north of Rowley, Iowa where Stella devoted her life to raising her nine children. After all the children were in school, Stella worked for Mark’s Locker in Rowley working until her retirement.

Stella was an avid sports fan. She bowled and golfed on leagues for many years. She also enjoyed playing cards and participating in many bridge and cribbage tournaments. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, and the Democratic Party.

She is survived by seven children: Joseph (Paulette) Mazur, Midway, GA; Christine Mazur, Waterloo, IA; John (Teri) Mazur, Royal, AR; Rebecca (Gary) Post, Des Moines, IA; Charles (Terrie) Mazur, Independence, IA; Michael (Kari) Mazur, Spirit Lake, IA; and Patrick Mazur, Ammon, ID. Ten Grandchildren, Fifteen Great Grandchildren, a sister Mary Brown, Panama City, FL, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mazur, Independence, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph in 1990, two daughters: Margaret and Mary Mazur, and two sisters: Margaret Wall and Dorothy Flickinger.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, Iowa with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Sunday and from 8 to 10 AM Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa. A Rosary will be recited at 4 PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
