Williams Is Dead
~
George Williams, the famous horseman who made Independence famous all over the country on account of his kite-shaped track and his horses Axtel and Allerton is dead. He passed away Monday at Galesburg, Ill., and was interred in Oakland Cemetery in Independence yesterday. Williams made and lost several fortunes. He had great success with his horses and his cherished dream was to make Independence a large city. He built streets, railroads, hotels and opera houses, but the pace he was going was too strong and the crash came. From Independence Williams went to Galesburg, where he lived the last few years. He is greatly mourned at Independence.
