Evelyn R. Cook, 84, of Independence, Iowa entered into her eternal rest on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Prairie Hills Memory Care Unit in Independence, Iowa.

Evelyn Ruth Cook was born September 25, 1932, at home in Winthrop, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Lena Vorland Jones. Evelyn spent her childhood growing up in Winthrop and attended local schools.

Evelyn married her high school sweetheart, Edwin C. Cook on May 28, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Winthrop. To this union were born two sons: David and Tom.

Evelyn and Edwin farmed south and north of Winthrop all their married life. Evelyn was a homemaker and also helped with farm work; milking cows, raising chickens, and gathering chicken eggs. She also raised peacocks and countless numbers of orphaned animals. She worked at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence for a short time and made many lifelong friends while employed there. In later years she was an in home caregiver. She loved crafts, crocheting, and collecting many things. She and Edwin spent a lot of time camping with the Backbone Good Sam's Camping Club. Edwin died suddenly on June 14, 2008. Evelyn moved to Prairie Hills assisted living in Independence in 2009 and enjoyed many years of card playing and socializing.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin, her sisters Marjorie Pierce and Helen Reck, and her brother Richard C. Jones.

Surviving include her two sons: David (Jan) Cook of Fairborn, Ohio and Tom (Kathy) Cook of Independence, Iowa; six grandchildren: Kayleen (Dustin) Schott, Bryan (Tesha) Cook, Kodi Cook, Tammy Stovall, Jeff (Jennifer) Cook, and Jonathan Cook; seventeen great grandchildren; special niece Sandy Pierce of Independence, many other nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law: Fred (Margaret) Cook and Donald Reck; sister in law Mary Rita Jones Greiner; and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 21, 2016 in the Church of Christ United at Winthrop with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating. Casketbearers will be: Brian Cook, Jeff Cook, Jon Cook, Dustin Schott, Duncan Schott, Kyron Cocking and Jeremy Smock. Honorary bearers will be Kayleen Schott, Tammy Stovall, and Kodi Cook. Interment will be in Fremont Township Cemetery north of Winthrop.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Dec. 20 from 3 PM until 7 PM at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and on Wednesday, Dec. 21 from 9:30 A.M. until service time.
