Vera Margaret Kinney, age 102, of Independence, Iowa, died Friday April 29, 2016 at the ABCM West Care Center in Independence, one day after her 102nd birthday.

Vera was born on April 28, 1914, in Lakota, Iowa, the daughter of Newton Daniel and Ida (Klaassen) Zingg. Vera attended country school southeast of Buffalo Center, Iowa, and following her schooling helped her parents on the family farm in rural Buffalo Center. When she was fifteen years old, Vera moved with her family to a farm outside Waterloo, Iowa. On June 5, 1946 Vera was united in marriage to Leland J. Kinney at her parent’s home in rural Waterloo. The couple made their homes in Littleton, Cedar Falls, Fairbank, Waterloo and Readlyn and in 1971, they made their home in Waverly, Iowa for 20 years. In 1991, the couple then moved to an acreage in Ackley, Iowa. In 2000, Vera moved to Cedar Rapids and Leland was admitted into Winslow House Care Center, Marion, Iowa. Leland passed away February 2001.
In July 2011, Vera became a resident of ABCM West Village Care Center, Independence, Iowa.

Vera enjoyed working in her huge gardens, canning and freezing her vegetables, making quilts and embroidering. Her home was always spotless and her baking was delicious. She was noted for homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and cookies. Vera could make a delicious meal in a flash when pop-in guests would arrive.

Vera is survived by her daughter and her husband, Barb and Mark Bonnet, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one son and his wife, James and Sheryl Kinney of Waterloo; 6 grandchildren, Kristen (Chris) Blasen, Kim (Terry) McGinn, Emily (Nic) Dahlheimer, Seth (Alyssa) Kinney, Stacy (Justin) Speakar, and Willy (Nikki) Haan; 11 great-grandchildren, Cade, Coby, Patrick, Cohen, Abraham, Kole, Katlyn, Brianna, Charles, Kendall, Keagan; a sister, Sarah Haan of Independence; one brother, Leonard (Lois) Zingg of Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, seven brothers, Orville Zingg, John Zingg, Clarence Zingg, Ervin Zingg, Donald Zingg, George Zingg and Fred Zingg, and 3 sisters, Grace Woolsey, Jeannette Price, and Annie Frickson.
