Vernie Kirkendall, 85, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday evening, September 22, 2016 at Unity Point – St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Glen Lavern “Vernie” Kirkendall was born on September 11, 1931 in Independence, Iowa the son of Glen E. and Mary A. (Abbott) Kirkendall. He was a 1949 graduate of the Independence High School, and was married to Elaine M. Fratzke on August 13, 1950. Vernie started working for the Railroad at the age of 16 and following his marriage he founded the Kirkendall Construction, and later started Independence Cashway Lumber Company which he operated until 1973. The family moved to Arizona for a couple of years returning to Independence in 1975 at which time he started the Kirkendall Real Estate Office operating it until his retirement.

Vernie was active in the Independence Community, being a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the IOOF, the Masonic Lodge, the Shysters Coffee Group, the Independence Eagles Club, the Buchanan County Senior Citizen Center, and the Independence Mat Club. He was a member of the Independence Mentoring Program and served as greeter welcoming students to school in the mornings, as well as delivering for the Meals on Wheels Program. He received the Governor’s Award for Volunteerism an unprecedented three times for his countless hours of volunteerism. He enjoyed playing the accordion at many venues in the Independence area, and loved golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Elaine Kirkendall, Independence, three children: Jeffery Kirkendall, Chino Valley, AZ, Micki Johnson, Prescott, AZ, Terry (Sara) Kirkendall, Austin, TX and two grandchildren; Cassie, and Chris Johnson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Vernie was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Lois Kersch, and cousins; Buster, Raymond, and David Gates.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, IA at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 8 PM Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 AM till services Tuesday at the church.
