Ruth M. (O’Brien) Marinus, 89, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence, Iowa.

Ruth was born on July 5, 1923, in Independence, Iowa the daughter of Charles E. and Meta A. (Nehls) Quass. She was a 1941 graduate of the Independence High School in Independence. She was married to Francis O’Brien and Harry Marinus, both marriages ended in divorce. Ruth was employed as a waitress prior to becoming a Nurse Aid at the Mental Health Institute in Independence working there for twenty six years prior to her retirement. Ruth loved her family, was an avid reader and loved to bake. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.

She is survived by five children; Linda (Mike) Andersen, Phoenix, AZ., Donna Bundy, Independence, IA., Gary (Joann) O’Brien, Independence, IA., Dennis (Cheryl) O’Brien, Camarillo, CA., and Lawrence (Melissa) O’Brien, Manassas, VA., ten grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, and a brother; Harold Quass, Presque Isle, Maine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a great granddaughter, a brother Edward Quass, and a sister; Doris Greenley.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating.

Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Independence, IA. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Friday.
