INDEPENDENCE - Gayle E. Copenhaver, 67, of Independence, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, in the Hospice Room at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, with Rev. B. J. Ukena officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, at the White Funeral Home, Independence.

A memorial fund has been established for Cedar Valley Hospice, 801 First St. E., Independence, IA 50644.

She was born Nov. 2, 1941, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Lester E. and Jemima Mary (Duckett) Thom. She was the valedictorian of the Oelwein High School class of 1959. In 1964, she graduated from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, with a BA in English. On July 7, 1962, she and Paul Glen Copenhaver were married in Santa Rosa, Calif. They were married for 34 years. Mrs. Copenhaver was a teacher in area schools, a childcare provider at Kidsville in Independence, and an active volunteer with several area organizations, but mostly she was a mother and grandmother for her family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.

Survivors include her son, Steven (Amy) of Independence, her two daughters, Ann (Mick) Fletcher of Iowa City, and Sarah (Jay) Beaver of Homestead, her five grandchildren, and her brothers, George Thom of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Roger (JoAnn) Thom of Cantonment, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Laurie Lynn.
