Dubuque Daily Times, January 2, 1858

Independence, December 29, 1857
A sad case of drowning occurred in town yesterday. A son of Herman Morse, while skating on the Mill Pond, near town, broke through the ice, and sank to the bottom before aid could reach him. He was a promising young lad, and much beloved by all who knew him. His body was recovered after a diligent search of an hour and a half, and an effort made to resuscitate him, but without avail.
