Struck by Lightning and Died.
Waverly Independent:—Joe Smith was under a tree which was struck by lightning about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and he received injuries from which, he died a few hours later. Joe was a son of Wm. Smith who lives in Polk township, a short distance north of Horton, where the accident occured. He was 18 years old.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1881 and died July 12, 1899. He is buried in the Horton Cemetery.
