Born May 2, 1903 in Sumner, Margareta Frederika Mendenhall was the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Schmidt) Leyh. She received her education in Sumner public schools, graduating from Sumner High School in 1921. She attended WestMar College in Le Mars and graduated in 1929.

She taught school in Readly from 1931 to 1934. She moved to New Albin where she taught until June 29, 1940, when she and John Mendenhall were married at Union United Methodist Church, rural Sumner. They lived in New Albin. He died Oct. 18, 1976, and in 1986, Margareta moved to Sumner.

She died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1993, at the Hillcrest Home, Sumner, where she had been a resident since November. Margareta was 90 years of age.

She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, New Albin, Banks Study Club, and at one time a member of P.E.O. in Lansing. Margareta also worked as a volunteer for almost 25 years at the County Care Facility in Waukon.

Surviving are one son, Milo of Des Moines; one daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Francis) Ward of Fort Wayne, IN; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Alfred Leyh of Sumner.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Matthew and Phillip, and one sister, Burnita.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 20, at Union United Methodist Church, rural Sumner, and at Grace United Methodist Church, New Albin.

The Rev. Roger White and the Rev. Robert Atherton officiated at the 10 a.m. services in Sumner, and the Rev. Tom Mattson conducted the 2:30 p.m. services in New Albin.
