Strangulated Hernia Fatal to Liberal Business Man-Born in Germany-Came to Liberal 15 Years Ago-Funeral and Burial Here Tuesday.
F.A. Marks, 59, one of Liberal's highly esteemed citizens, died at Stone Memorial hospital in Carthage Sunday night about midnight, following a strangulated hernia operation which he underwent on last Wednesday.
The operation disclosed gangrene and peritonitis had developed. It was thought for a time his condition was very favorable, but death claimed his life despite medical skill and all loving hands could do.
Mr. Marks had been in the shoe repair business in Liberal for about fifteen years. He possessed great skill in this line and turned out the best of work. Mr. Marks was a member of the German Lutheran church, the I.O.O.F. lodge and the Knights of Pythias.
Funeral services for Mr. Marks were held at the M.E. church in Liberal, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. A.L. Collins and Rev. J.T. Carnett in charge. Song numbers, "Old Rugged Cross" and "Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Mrs. H.K. Robins and Mrs. Ray Black, with Miss Edith Carnett at the piano.
Pallbearers were, A.N. Wimmer, Joe Gill, C.G. Lapp, Joe Hedges, Fred Dazey and Howard Durham.
Interment was in the Liberal cemetery. The body lay in state at the Ellsworth chapel in Pittsburg until the hour of the funeral.
Following is the obituary as read at the funeral:
Frank August Marks, son of August and Minnie Marks, was born Feb. 1, 1878 in a small village near Stargart, Germany. He came, with his parents, to America in 1888. In 1896 he began learning the shoe repairing trade in Sumner, Iowa. In 1900 he moved to Nashua, Iowa, and started in business for himself in a shoe and repair shop. In 1902 he was married to Bertha Plagens. To this union was born one son Arnold Carl Marks. In 1919 he came to Lamar, Mo., and lived on a farm for two years, coming to Liberal in 1922. Just a year later his wife passed away, Oct. 1923. In 1928 he was married to Orlena Kelly of Golden City. He departed this life in Stone Memorial hospital of Carthage, Nov. 14, 1937, after a ten days' illness, aged 59 years, 9 months, 13 days.
He leaves to mourn his loss in his immediate home, his wife, his son Arnold and wife and their two children Phyllis Jean and Darell D., and Mary Frances Lewellyn, a granddaughter of Mrs. Marks, who has made her home with them since 1930.
Also he leaves four brothers and three sisters. His father, mother, two brothers and one sister having preceeded him in death. Those of his old home still living are Gustave, August, Bertha Pagel and Mrs. George Muether, all of Sumner, Iowa, William of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Albert of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. Minnie Topp of Elgin, Iowa.
His wife, his brother, William, and his son Arnold were at his bedside when the end came.
His body will be laid to rest in the Liberal cemetery. In his going his home has lost a faithful husband and father and the community a faithful and consistent citizen. He will be sorely missed in his home and by many friends.
