John Swale

John Swale was born in Yorkshire, England in 1811. In 1837 he married Eliza Knapton and they had 3 children. John earned his living as an Inn Keeper. Eliza died only 6 years later. John married again, this time to Harriet Freeman, who died only a year after they were married. Then John married Ann Stabler in 1846. Seven years later, John and Ann immigrated to the United States with their children, arriving in Cook County, Illinois in 1855. In 1860 they settled in Bremer County, making their home in Waverly, where they established a farm. John became a naturalized citizen of the United States on Oct. 6, 1862. Children who lived in Bremer County were: Charles Swale; Sarah Matilda Swale (who married Stewart Daily); Mary A. Swale (who married Albert Van Tassell); John Thomas Swale (who married Azelia Sponable); and Frederick W. Swale (who married Adell Farnham). Ann Swale died in 1871 and is buried at Mentor-Fay Cemetery. John and Julia Ann Farnham were married about 1875. John Swale died on Feb 8th, 1882 at his home in Leroy Township at age 76. He was remembered as one of the “old settlers”. He is buried at Mentor-Fay Cemetery near his wife, Ann.
