Wilma Frances Bennett died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa.

Wilma Frances (Hellwege) Bennett was born March 24, 1918, in Amaqua Township, Boone County, Iowa, the second child born to Frank and Ida (Shadle) Hellwege. She attended school in Boxholm, Iowa, and graduated from Jordan High School in May 1935.

Wilma married Virgil E. Bennett in Ames, Iowa, on June 11, 1941. The couple farmed and lived in Ames, Gilbert, near Napier and in Amaqua Township, moving to Boxholm in 1961. They relocated to Boone in 1969, where Wilma resided until her death.

Wilma served as a 4-H Leader and Girl Scout Leader in Boone and Story counties, as well as being a member of the American Embroiderer's Guild. She was active in AARP, RSVP and served as a Resident Advocate for the Eastern Star Masonic Home during the past 15 years. Wilma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Boone for over 40 years and served in many capacities in Women's groups. She worked for approximately ten years at Fab N Trim fabric store in Boone, where she met many Boone County residents.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Twila Chambers and husband, Mark of Gladstone, Missouri and Karla Jenkins and husband, Walter Jr. of rural Boone County. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kristina Hall of Boulder, Colorado, Amy Schoene and husband, Rob of West Des Moines, Daniel Jenkins of rural Boone County and Jessica Jenkins of Boone. Other survivors include a brother-in-law, Wilbur Bennett and wife, Joan of Victoria, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara Devitt and husband, Bill of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday morning, July 17 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 703 Arden Street in Boone, with Rev. Phil Webb and Rev. Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating.

Interment will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel, 609 Seventh Street in Boone on Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where the family will be present. Visitations will continue at the Church on Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Boone or Iowa Hospice.
