Jerry Donald Dykes was born October 9, 1940, son of Sebert and Rosa (Jennings) Dykes. He was raised and attended schools in Waterloo. Jerry met Donna Rebik at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church and the two were married May 20, 1983.

He worked for John Deere in maintenance and repairs retiring in 1994. Jerry was a passionate musician and taught his dear friend, Dave Schake, to play guitar. The two started performing at nursing homes, concerts in the parks and many other venues to witness to others about the Lord and called their group “The Pilgrims.” Others joined their group and Jerry played until his health no longer permitted in the summer of 2017.

He also wrote and distributed tracts to others as a means of witnessing. Jerry loved his family and would take his grandchildren fishing.

Jerry passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, May 14, 2018, at the age of 77 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-grandson, Robert; brother, Eldon Dykes; and a sister, Rosalee Schwartz.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Donna (just 6 days short of their 35th anniversary); his sons, Charles “Chaz” Dykes of San Diego, CA and Rick (Christine) Dykes of Jesup; step-sons, Dr. James (Sue Ellyn) Rebik of Arlington, TX and Dave Rebik of O’Fallon, IL; step-daughters, Karen (Michael) Lawrence of Ocala, FL and Janis (Dr. Joseph) Hamm of St. James, MN; sisters, Gladys Pichelmann of Dysart and Helen Owens of Waterloo; 3 grandchildren: Skylar (Aubree), Dawson and Gracie; 14 step-grandchildren: Christopher, Kristin (Lawrence), Johnathan, Jennifer (Sal), Jessica, Sharon (Karl), Lori (Todd), Sara (Neal), Amy (Edwin), Rachel (Josh), Nathan (Mindy), Andrew, Abigail, and James; 2 great-grandchildren: Zoey and Jonah; and 20 step great-grandchildren: Aliandra and brother , Alexandria, Samuel, Emmalina, Lillyanna, Joshua, Christian, Claire, Brandt, Blake, Andrew, Dave, Danika, Kianna, Aubryn, Cole, Gavin, Kaylee, and Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Jerry’s family.
