Hilda C. Schmit, 94, of Gilbertville, Iowa, died Sunday, March 18 at home, of natural causes.

She was born May 19, 1923 in Raymond, Iowa, the daughter of John and Susan Welter Lutgen. She married Louis M. Schmit June 28, 1949 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. He died July 3, 1987.

Hilda was employed with Hinson Manufacturing during WWII and then with Friendship Village for 40 years.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis J. (Barb) of Atlanta, Ga. and Scott L. (Dawna) of Gilbertville; three daughters, Mary J. Borwig of Waterloo; Becky S. (Bill) Woodyard and Lois A. (Peter) Weber both of Evansdale; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way; a brother, Casper “Butch” Lutgen of LaPorte City and two sisters, Rita Weber of Gilbertville and Theresa Delagardelle of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by two grandchildren in infancy, Megan and Zachary Schmit; five brothers, Paul, Joseph and Gene Lutgen and two brothers in infancy and four sisters, Leona “Lee” Rapalee, Donna Mae Frost, Anna Mae Schmit and Mary Phillips.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 22 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville with inurnment in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Cedar Valley Hospice or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
