Biography--

Gene Hunck, 89, of the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls, left this earth on Monday, November 20, 2017.

He was born on June 06, 1928 in Loyal, Oklahoma; the son of Lorris and Helen Archer Dunn Hunck.

He graduated from Loyal High School, and went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University with his Bachelor of Science in Engineering; he then earned his Masters of Science in Engineering from the University of Nebraska and an MBA from the University of Northern Iowa.

After graduation from Oklahoma State University, Gene served in the U.S. Air Force for two years in Korea, upon returning home he stayed in the reserves eventually leaving with the rank of Major.

After his service in the Air Force and obtaining his engineering Master’s degree, Gene came to Waterloo, Iowa. Gene worked as a hydraulic engineer at John Deere and Co. in Waterloo for 27 years and had the opportunity to travel the world.

Shortly after arriving in Iowa, Gene met Betty Eaton. They were married on August 31, 1956 at Waterloo First United Methodist Church in the Fireside room and were together for over 61 years.

Upon his early retirement from John Deere, Gene taught engineering classes at Hawkeye Tech until the school switched to a liberal arts school. Following that, he went to work for Blount Inc. near Raleigh, NC for four years where he and Betty would spend two weeks in Raleigh and two weeks in Cedar Falls.

When Gene and Betty got tired of all the traveling, Gene found an opportunity with the Waterloo Technical Society and UNI - Ag. Based Industrial Lubricants doing experimental research developing new biodegradable oil formulations.

Among his other work, Gene was an entrepreneur and founded Legacy Development Company, a family business, where he and his family did general contracting and real estate development. Gene was 83 when he finally retired for good.

Gene enjoyed bowling, fishing the lakes of Minnesota, pheasant hunting, and woodworking. He played the saxophone in the John Deere Band and in the Cedar Falls Municipal Band. He was able to attend his 60th high school reunion. Gene had also attended Air Force reunions and had the opportunity to take an honor flight.

Gene is survived by his wife, Betty Hunck of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Karen Hunck of Encinitas, CA; a son, Brian Hunck and his wife, Dawn of Richardson, TX; and two grandchildren, Anakah Hunck and Garrett Hunck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Hunck; and two sisters, Helenita Wagner and Sarah Marie Favier.
