Biography--

Donald Omar Nold, 82, of Waterloo, Iowa died at Covenant Medical Center Sunday, November 12, 2017.

He was born June 29, 1935 in Onaka, South Dakota, the son of Leo and Katherine Trefz Nold. He graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1953 where he had been elected class president; Don also attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Don married Evelyn Moline on November 15, 1958, at United Brethren Church in Lansing, Iowa.

In 1958, he began his 40+ years in construction industry with Peter Kiewit & Sons out of Omaha as crew supervisor working several bridge and road projects for seven years in 12 different towns across Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. The biggest of those was I-90. He and his crew were the first ones to hang up the signage for Casper, Wyoming exit back in the 1960's.

When he came to Waterloo to work for Brice-Petrides he was department head of construction-related services. Construction crews feared him and his “punch list.” If the blue print said 1/2” and it wasn’t, the construction company had to redo at their expense. He also remarked that there was 25 years of work to be done here. One of his first projects was building the levees and flood gates to prevent the city’s flooding. This included the urban renewal project that was big in the early 1970’s.

Other projects of his include the Sara Lee plant in New Hampton; Waterloo’s 4th St., 5th St., Park Ave. and 6th St. bridges; waste water treatment plant (for which he received certifications); projects with the Iowa DOT; Black Hawk County Landfill; Waterloo Airport runways collaborating with Federal Transportation Administration. In 1993 Don worked for the Corp of Engineers on a dredging rig after the flood in the Quad Cities. The devastation that he witnessed was very hard on him personally.

He was a regular at Waterloo City Council meetings (which were not a favorite of his). He and Mayor Leo Rooff were well acquainted and thought highly of each other. Don retired after 31 years in 1998 as Head of Construction-related Services.

Don was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church and enjoyed wood working hobbies and playing solitaire. He was a regular attender of Morg’s Diner. He was involved in AA over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two daughters: Nancy Osborn and husband David of Waterloo and Susan Swindal and husband Harold of Birmingham, Alabama; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn daughter, Rebecca; three brothers: Martin C. (Marla), Roy (Emma), and Dale (Myrt); a sister, Ruth (Maurice "Bub") Hobus; and a niece, Laurie Hobus.
