CEDAR FALLS, IOWA -- Eugene "Gene" Harrington, 95, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Western Home Communities Martin Health Center; inurnment at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, with military honors conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 honor guard, followed by a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. at the Western Home Communities Chapel, Cedar Falls; Richardson Funeral Service, 266-3525.

Obituary for Eugene C. Harrington

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – Eugene “Gene” Harrington, 95, of Cedar Falls died Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

He was born September 9, 1922 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, son of Eugene and Viola (Maisel) Harrington. He married Marty “Margie” Leckbee on October 22, 1945 at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California. She died April 28, 2017.

He graduated in 1940 from East High School in Des Moines and awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the US Marine Corps during World War II. He attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and was employed for 35 years with John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring as a Quality Engineer in 1982. He was a charter and lifetime member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49, a member of the Manufacturing Engineering Club, John Deere Supervisors Club and lifetime member of Beaver Hills Country Club.

Survived by: one son, Douglas (Patricia) Harrington of Houston, TX; a sister, Diane (Ron) Christensen of Jacksonville, FL; and a brother-in-law, Don Dunlap of Cedar Rapids.

Preceded in death by: a son, Michael Harrington; and three sisters: Catherine Messmaker, Marilyn Reed and Joan Dunlap.

Inurnment will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, with military honors conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49 honor guard, followed by a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. at the Western Home Communities Chapel, Cedar Falls. Richardson Funeral Service, 266-3525, is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the Western Home Foundation or charity of donor’s choice.
