Biography--

Neal Slattenow, 71, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, October 14, 2017 at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital, Waterloo, from complications of cancer.

He was born October 1, 1946 in Waterloo, son of Sanford and Alma Baack Slattenow. He married Diane M. Clark April 12, 1963 at First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. She died April 23, 2014. Neal graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1964. He was a journeyman plumber at Young Plumbing & Heating Co. for 48 years, retiring in 2013.

Neal was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was an avid reader. He also was a devoted sports fan who loved the New York Yankees, Nolan Ryan and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Neal was the self-proclaimed president of the Grandkids’ Pep Club. He never missed his grandchildren’s sporting events, which included many trips to Florida. He was an amazing grandpa.

Neal made the best baked beans and coleslaw and paired them with barbeque, which was his favorite meal. He was a sun worshipper who took any opportunity he could get to sit on the beaches in Florida, or even in a lawn chair in his driveway. He loved to travel with his wife and family, most notably to South Dakota and the Grand Canyon. He was greatly admired at work, where he trained several young employees.

He is survived by a son, Brad (Kristy) Slattenow of Waterloo; a daughter, Brenda Simo of Lynn Haven, FL; three grandchildren, Josh (Nicole), Nathan and Morgan; two step grandchildren, Troy and Jaden; two great granddaughters, Olivia and Vivian; two brothers, Percy (Linda) Slattenow of Waterloo and Monte Slattenow of San Diego, CA, and his two beloved companion grand dogs, Ganon and Ryder.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, and one sister, Sandra.
