William “Bill” Barnes, the son of Howard and Bernice Barnes, was born on May 7, 1929, in Waterloo, Iowa. He grew up in Dysart, where he attended Dysart High School, graduating with the class of 1947. After high school, Bill attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a business degree. He then joined the Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. Bill joined his father in business at Barnes Hardware Store in Dysart.

After his father’s death, his brother-in-law, Kermit Brinkmeyer, became his partner, forming Barnes and Brinkmeyer Hardware. In 1973, Bill was united in marriage to Joan Monteforte and together raised two daughters, Cheryl and Maria. Bill enjoyed boating and skiing with his family, fishing with friends, and dancing.

He was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church, Shriners, the Dysart American Legion, Dysart Masonic Lodge, and the Dysart Lions Club. Bill died at the age of 88 on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Lutheran Living Home in Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by parents and a brother-in-law, Kermit Brinkmeyer.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joan of Wilton; two daughters, Cheryl (Steve) Rebik of Aurora, Colorado and Maria Rice of Wilton; five grandchildren: Christina, Kyle, Austin, Emily, and Jordan; and a sister, Margaret Brinkmeyer of St. Louis, Missouri.
