Biography--

Erma Ellner Heying, 91, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at her home.

She was born October 10, 1925 on a farm near Alta Vista, Iowa, daughter of Rudolph and Freida (Warnke) Hilgendorf.

At 18, Erma moved to Milwaukee to help with the war effort by working in the foundry at Milwaukee Malleable, and she also worked as a waitress. She later was a landlord in Waterloo.

Erma married Earl Ellner, and he preceded her in death in 1959. She moved back to Iowa and made a home with Norbert Heying, together they raised her three daughters. Norbert preceded her in death in 1987.

She was a member of Maple Leaf Church in Saratoga. Erma loved music. She performed with friends, entertaining residents at many area care facilities and other venues. She loved birds, butterflies, and berries from the garden…and she made a mean dill pickle.

Erma is survived by two daughters, Linda (Tim) Sherwood of Waterloo and Quincana Ellner of Waterloo; a son-in-law, Henry Jungling of Wisconsin; six grandchildren: John (Sue) Jungling of Alaska, Dawn Jungling Stiebs of Wisconsin, David (Lynn) Jungling of Alabama, Tim (Mandy) Sherwood, Jr. of Hudson, Vic (Veronica) Barber of Waterloo, and Josh (Karen) Halley of Waterloo; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Earl; Norbert Heying; a daughter, Marilyn Jungling; a sister, Alean Fischer; and two brothers: LaVerne Hilgendorf and Harvey Hilgendorf.
