Died

At his late residence in this city Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1883, Geo. T. Wentworth, aged 41 years. The funeral took place on Friday at 2 p.m. from the Presbyterian church, under the auspices of John L. Bashore Post No. 122, G. A. R.

Deceased was born in the state of Maine, in 1842, and came to this county with his father's family in 1854, consequently was one of the old settlers of the county. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in Company D, 6th Iowa Infantry, the first company raised in this county, and served until the end of the war, re-enlisting in the old company at the expiration of the first three years. As a soldier his record stands second to no one. Since the war he has resided at this place. The immediate cause of death was a complication of several diseases, principally of the liver and stomach and a stricture which dates back to his army life and had troubled him more or less ever since. He was taken bad on the Friday night preceding his death but was thought to be improving after the first day until Monday evening when he took a change for the worse and on Tuesday an operation was performed which, while it was successful for the time being, gave no permanent relief. He gradually became weaker until Wednesday evening at 8:30 when he breathed his last. The funeral was conducted by Rev. W. W. Thorpe, chaplain of John L. Bashore, Post No. 122, G. A. R. The attendance of the members of that Post was large, there being over one hundred of the order in line. He was one of the charter members and the first Post Commander of that Post and took a great deal of interest in the order. He was also a member of the Knights of Labor and an active member of that or any other institution in which he held a membership. He leaves a wife and two children, one of which is nearly grown.
