Bert Ranes (1925-2020)

Bert Ranes, age 94 of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Homestead of Centerville.
Bert was born on October 9, 1925 in Appanoose County, Iowa, near Udell, Iowa, the son of Orlo and Geneva (Hedgecock) Ranes. He graduated from Centerville High School with the Class of 1944. Two weeks after graduation, Bert enlisted in the United States Navy. He faithfully served his country during World War II, and was honorably discharged.
Bert was united in marriage to Bonnie Fuqua on October 9, 1949. To this union, three children were born, Barb, Betsy, and Bart.
Bert was employed by Clean Towel Service in Fort Dodge, Iowa until 1971, when he relocated to Centerville, where he owned and operated the Town and Country Restaurant. He worked there until 1975, when he took a position at Young Radiator. Bert retired in 1992 from Young Radiator. In retirement, he enjoyed fishing and helping anyone in need, including working part time for the Centerville School District delivering school lunches. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville.
Left to honor Bert's memory are his daughters, Barb (Larry) Good of Albia, Iowa, and Betsy (Roger) Anderson of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Adam Ranes of Waukee, Iowa, Dan Cubit of Urbandale, Iowa, Joe Cubit of Ankeny, Iowa, and Matt Anderson of Plano, Texas; six great grandchildren, Ellery Ranes, Sadie Ranes, Aven Ranes, Hazel Ranes, Emma Anderson, and Hannah Anderson; as well as several other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Orlo and Geneva Ranes; his son, Bart Ranes; his brother, Bernard Ranes; his sister, Dorothy Boyd; and a long time special friend, Jewell Bryant.
The public is invited to honor Bert's life at 11 AM, Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Chaplain Terry Roberts officiating. Military rites will follow the Celebration of Life service. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to EveryStep Hospice and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
