PIONEER OF THIS CITY IS CALLED BY DEATH FRIDAY
Mrs. Hedwig Louise Burkland Was a Charter Member of First Lutheran Church
Mrs. Hedwig Louise Burkland, 88, mother of Mrs. Anna Bill Berg, and Carl Burkland, of Centerville, died yesterday at 4:00 p.m. At the home of her daughter, following a long period of failing health.
In the death of Mrs. Burkland, Centerville loses a long time and loved resident, who was a charter member of the first Lutheran Church, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1941. She was known over the city as a splendid Christian character and was never too tired or busy for her Bible, which was her constant companion.
Hedwig Louise Peterson, was born in Smaland, Sweden, January 12, 1854 and was 88 years, 10 months and 28 days of age at the time her death. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Peterson. Miss Peterson came to the United States and Chicago in 1871 to join her brother August. There she met and united in marriage with Andrew Burkland in 1874.
The young couple moved to Eldon in 1886 and two Centerville in 1877. Here Mr. Burkland engaged in contracting and in the cold mining business.
Six children were born to the marriage in one, Isaac, preceded the mother in death in 1900. In 1912 Mr. Burkland died. Living are Alfred, of Keokuk, Mrs. Anna Billberg, of Centerville, Mrs. Agnes Thompson, of Glendale, California, Albert, of Udell, and Carl, of Centerville. There are 11 grandchildren.
Mrs. Burkland had made her home with Mrs. Billberg since her husband's death. In death she is the last member of her family. Because of her splendid character and wide acquaintance Mrs. Burkland will be mourned by a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. At the Lutheran Church with the Rev. Malvin Lundeen, of Ottumwa, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
Mrs. Burkland died as she had lived quietly and peacefully and in complete faith in her Creator.
