James Howe Vet and War Hero at 22

Further information is given today concerning James Howe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Howe of Mystic, who was killed on the Korean front February 22, 1951. Formal announcement of his death was received from the war department recently. It is brought out today that after his uncle Claude Boslem was seriously wounded in the Korean fighting that James volunteered for front-line duty and was sent immediately to the 24th Division. He gained recognition for outstanding bravery under fire but it was just six months after he joined the 24th that he was killed.

Was in Navy
James entered service the first time when he was 17 years of age. He served 14 months in the navy in the South Pacific in World War II. After being discharged from the Navy he joined the paratroopers serving one year. He received his wings April 13, 1948 for both paratrooper and glider man. He was then discharged and worked as a trucker in Rockford, Illinois.

James wanted to see Germany. The result was that she and uncle Claude Boslem joined the Army. Instead of seeing Germany, however, he was sent with his uncle immediately to Japan. Claude was sent to Korea where he was seriously wounded. It was then that James asked to be sent to the frontlines and his wish was granted. He distinguished himself under fire and was cited for bravery in action.

Killed February 22
However, he was killed on February 22. He would have been 23 years of age on May 19, 1951. The Bronze Star which he was awarded will be a cherished possession of the surviving relatives. James wanted because he dared to go out into direct enemy fire to bring in wanted comrades.

He is survived by his mother and father and one brother, Bennie, of Washington, Iowa, who served in World War II. There are three sisters, Patricia at home, Joan, of Rockford, Illinois, and Mrs. Grace Lee, of Moline. He also leaves two grandmothers, Mrs. Mae James and Mrs. Grace Boslem both of Mystic.

James was widely known and liked and his death brings deep personal sorrow to a wide circle of friends and relatives.
