Mrs. Alva Cross

Margaret Leah Masters, daughter of John L. and Florence Moxley Masters, was born January 3, 1885, near Seymour, Wayne county, Iowa. She departed this life July 31, 1938, at the St. Joseph, hospital In Centerville, being 53 years, 6 months and 28 days of age. She was united in marriage with Alva J. Cross March 2, 1906. One son, Melvin, came to bless this home. She was the second of a family of ten children. Her mother, one brother and two sisters have preceded her in death. Those remaining to mourn her passing are her husband and son, her father and stepmother of Centerville, Iowa, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Gertrude Burton of Selano, New Mexico; Mrs. Minta Johnson of Allerton, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Workman, LeRoy and Luther Masters of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Mary Scritchfield of Centerville; Marlin Masters, half-brother, - and Mrs. Martha Efaw; half-sister, of Detroit; also many other relatives and a host of friends.

She was-converted at the age, of fifteen and became a member of the M. E. church at KniffIn later affiliating with the Centerville church. She was a member of the Golden Link Sunday School, class and the Ladies Aid Society., She mentioned recently that she had always lived true to her faith in God. This was proven by the upright life she lived. Her husband said she bad not missed praying nightly in their thirty-two years of married life. Her last words were words of prayer and songs of praise to God. Then in the early hours of the Sabbath morning, she quietly slipped away to Him, "Face to face."

The greatest token of love, the highest eulogy to be pronounced, the most eloquent obituary In memory of Mrs. Cross will hot be pronounced from the pulpit or written by the pen, but .will be found In the aching hearts of those who have lost the model wife and mother and in the silent tear of those who have lost a friend. The following poem entitled, "Some One Had Prayer,” by Grace Nell Crowell seems fitting at this time:

The day was long, the burden I had borne,
Seemed heavier than I could longer bear.
And then it lifted—but I did not know
Some one had knelt in prayer.

Had taken me to God that very hour,
And asked the easing of the load, and He,
In infinite compassion, had stooped down
And.taken it from me.

We cannot tell how. often as we pray
For some hart one, bewildered and distressed,
The answer, comes—but many times those, hearts
Find sudden peace and rest.

Sone one had prayed, and Faith, a reaching hand;
Took hold of God, and brought .Him down that day
So many, many hearts have need of prayer,
Oh, let us pray!

"Funeral service were conducted by-the Reverend Harvey C. Miller, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, in the M. E. church. - Interment was made .on the family lot at Promise City. Miss Kathryn Hawkins, and Mrs. Marshall Phillips sang, "In the Garden,” “No Night There" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul” They were accompanied by Mrs. Tom Olds, organist, The following persons were pallbearers:. Fred Lyons, Orton Clime, Ray Dooley, Sam Martin, Sam Ellis and Allen Cochran.
