THOMAS PHIPPS CALLED BY DEATH

Aged Retired Miner Had Been a Resident of Centerville for Past 89 Years

Thomas Riley Phipps, 87, long tie resident of this city, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James McElderry, 1710 South Sixteenth street, at 7 P. M. Saturday. He had been in ill health for some time.

Mr. Phipps was born March 29, 1855, and was 87 years and 12 days of age at the time of his death. He was a retired miner and had lived in this community for the past 39 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Belle, May 16, 1940.

Surviving children are: Mrs Bess Gallagher, of Keokuk, Mrs. Neva Gilson, of St. Louis, Mrs Lois Shirley, of Phoenix, Mrs. Loa Poljak, of Chicago, Mrs. Naomi McElderry, and Mrs. Frances McInnis and Virgil and Elmer, of Centerville, Beryl, of Rockford and Forrest, of St. Joseph, Missouri. One son, William H., died in 1928 and one daughter preceded the father in death in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 o’clock at the Holiness Church and burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

OBITUARY

Thomas Riley Phipps

Thomas Riley Phipps, son of Joe and Hazel Phipps, was born March 29, 1855, in Platt county, Mo., and passed away Saturday, April 11th, 1942, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James McElderry, at 1710 S. 15th street, at the age of 87 years. 13 days.

He was married to Belle Allen at Galt, Mo., in 1886. To this union was born 12 children. His wife and two children preceded him in death. The following are left to mourn his death: Mrs. Bess Gallagher, Keokuk; Mrs. Neva Gibson, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Lois Shirley, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Lola Poljak, Chicago; Mrs. Frances McInnis and Beryl of Rockford, Ill.; Forrest, St. Joseph, Mo.; Naomi, Virgil and Elmer of Centerville. Ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Phipps moved to Appanoose county in 1903 and was a resident the remainder of his life.

He was converted in 1908 and later received the experience of entire sanctification and affiliated himself with the Church of god “Holiness.”
