C. Michael Collins, 65, president of GAC Co. of Rochester, also a former area bank president and one-time legislative candidate, died Saturday at Regina Memorial Hospital in Hastings of a heart condition. He had been ill several years.
He was born Nov. 26, 1911, in New Albin, Iowa, and married Charlotte Bartholomew in Minneapolis on Nov. 17, 1934.
He lived most of his life in southeastern Minnesota, using Dodge Center as his official address. He served as president of the First State Bank of Red Wing until about two years ago, and until his death had been on the bank’s board of directors.
As a real estate broker, he also was involved in numerous commercial enterprises throughout southeastern Minnesota. He was president and co-owner with his daughter, Ann Chafoulias of Rochester, of GAC Co. The firm was one of the developers of the Park Towers apartment complex for elderly persons and other housing projects including Northgate Plaza to be built next year, and 96 townhouse units for low-income families in northwest Rochester.
Mr. Collins also had been in the wholesale poultry and eggs business in Dodge Center. In 1970 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Minnesota Senate from Dodge, Steele, and Olmsted counties.
Survivors are his widow; one son, Michael of Red Wing; one daughter, Mrs. Chafoulias of Rochester; six grandchildren; two brothers, Leo of Owatonna and Clete of Spring Valley. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Mass of Christian Burial was 2 p.m. today at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Surprenant officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
The family prefers memorials to the Senior Citizens Fund.
