News of the death of Mrs. Michael Quillin, a lifelong resident of this county, reached Waukon relatives on Wednesday last, her demise having taken place that morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Celia Plein at Bankston, Dubuque county.
Mrs. Quillin was a native of Pennsylvania and would have attained her 85th birthday had she lived until Sept. 18. She came to this county when a small girl as Rose Ann McGuinness, where her long active life had since been spent. In April, 1866, she was married to Michael Quillin at Lansing, Iowa. They became the parents of 13 children, of whom 11 are now living.
Mr. Quillin died in 1919, and also a daughter, Mrs. Mayme Liddiard, and Phillip have passed away. Those surviving are six sons and five daughters, namely: Thomas, Hokah, Minn.; Joseph, Brownsville; Leonard, Lawler; John, Harpers Ferry; William, Dubuque; Edward, Waukon; Mrs. Ed Collins, New Albin; Mrs. John Plein, Bankston; Mrs. Albert Liddiard, Mrs. Fred Hancock, and Mrs. Michael Sweeney, all of Waukon and vicinity. She leaves 54 grandchildren and of them 22 grandsons grown to manhood, were present at her funeral.
Mrs. Quillin was of a fine, old neighborly type of woman; a good wife and mother, and enjoyed the cordial friendship of friends throughout her life. She was a devout member of the Catholic church.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s, Hanover, where a mass of requiem was celebrated by the pastor, Fr. P. F. Reynolds. Burial was in the family plot in the adjacent cemetery. The funeral cortege numbered 130 cars, many friends of the family being present from Lawler, Iowa, Houston county, Minn., and from all parts of the county.
