Mrs. Thomas Gavin, 75, life-long resident of Allamakee county, died Thursday at Harpers Ferry, where she was born in 1860. In 1887 she was married at Wexford to Thomas Gavin, who survives together with their ten children. She is also survived by six brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Catholic church at Harpers Ferry; with Father Costello celebrating a mass of requiem, assisted by Father O'Sullivan.

Note: Josephine was married twice. Her first husband was John Shields.

Harpers Ferry Mother Answers Death's Call

The death of Mrs. Thomas Gavin, well known and life long resident of Harpers Ferry, occurred Thursday at her home in that place, after a period of ill health following a paralytic stroke sustained four years ago.

Josephine La Tronche was born at Harpers Ferry in 1860, and was 75 years of age. She was twice married, her first husband being John Shields, deceased. In 1887 she was married to Thomas Gavin, the ceremony taking place at the Wexford church.

Surviving are her husband and ten children, namely: Frank Shields, Mrs. James Kernan, Dan, Philip and Ben Gavin and Mrs. Wm. Cota, Jr., all of Harpers Ferry; Mrs. Harry Smith, Fremont, Sask., Canada; Mrs. John Hennessey, Cherry Mound; Peter, Bird Island, Minn., and Joseph, Dubuque. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: John La Tronche, New Albin; Peter and Mrs. David Martelle, Harpers Ferry; Mrs. Thomas Broderick, Ossian; Mrs. Julia Postal, Chicago, and Sister M. Aimee, Notre Dame, Ind.

Mrs. Gavin had attained a venerable age and her death was the first break in the family circle.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and the Rosary society of Harpers Ferry, where the funeral was held Saturday morning, high mass of requiem being celebrated by the pastor, Rev. J.J. Costello. Burial took place in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Paint Rock.

On the Paint Rock Cemetery List, Allamakee County, Iowa, dated January 12, 1992, page 7, the birth date for Josephine is Nov. 15, 1860 and the death date is May 8, 1935.
