OPERATION FAILS TO PROVIDE RELIEF FOR MARTIN ROGGENSACK

-------
Aged Man Passes Away at Home of Daughter Here Saturday Morning

-------

An operation performed on Martin Roggensack, 88, Thursday afternoon proved of no benefit and as a result his condition continued to grow worse until death ended his suffering at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. J. Duhrkopf Saturday. His right leg was amputated near the hip.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock from the Salem Evangelical church, Rev. J. D. Klooz officiating, assisted by Rev. R Ferguson of the Union Evangelical church. The remains were transported on Monday to Lansing, his former home, where another service was held with Rev. Klooz in charge, assisted by Rev.
E. H. Walter of that place. The body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in Oak Hill cemetery at that place.
Martin Roggensack was born in the city of Neubuttow, province of Macklinburg, Schwerin, Germany, January 3, 1844, and passed to his eternal home at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.J. Duhrkopf in Sumner June 18, 1932, at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 14 days.
When a young man of 18 years, he bade farewell to his home country and came to America, settling in Columbus, Wis. After a stay of about two years he came to Lansing where he worked among the farmers. After four years, he purchased a farm south of Lansing which became his home for 44 years.
It was in those early years at Lansing that he met Miss Marie Hartung who joined him in marriage March 9, 1870. This union was blessed with 10 children: one daughter and nine sons. After the death of his wife eight years ago, he came to Sumner to make his home with his daughter where nothing was spared to make his declining years happy and peaceful. He retained the use of his faculties and his sight to the very last which was a wonderful blessing.
At the age of 28 he publicly acknowledged a Christian conversation and became a devout member of the Evangelical church. During the years he served as trustee, steward and class leader in the congregation at Lansing.
He leaves to mourn nine children as follows:
Mrs. E.J. Duhrkopf of Sumner, Edward J. of Waukon, Herman of West Union, Henry of Pittstown, New Jersey, Amiel of Cedar Rapids, Garfield of Albert Lea, Minn., Charles of Langheed, Alberta, Canada, Rudolph H of Kansas City, Kansas, Lute of Moorhead, Minn.; also 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; also an aged brother over 91 years of age, John Roggensack, who with his wife, came from Dubuque to attend the last rites here, and many other friends. Six of the grandsons acted as pallbearers.
Those in attendance at the services here were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Roggensack and family, Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Roggensack, Mr. and Mrs. N.E. Roggensack, Mr. and Mrs. K.A. Roggensack, R.R.
