Emma J., daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Bulman, born on the English Bench in Union City township February 25, 1862, and died April 13, 1923, in the same neighborhood, after an illness of about seven months' duration. She was sixty-one years, one month and nineteen days of age.
She received a common school education in the old log schoolhouse, after which she took a course in normal training at Waukon, and taught school for a time in this county.
On Feb. 23, 1882, she was united in marriage to Alfred E. Beardmore, to which union were born five children. The first born, a son, died in infancy. Energy frugality and thrift, combined with good judgment and economy, were among her characteristics, which enabled her to do her part in home making and rearing and training her family to a measure of success most creditable.
On February 10th, 1877, she united with Mt. Hope Presbyterian church by profession of faith in Jesus Christ, in Whom she anchored her hopes and in Whose teachings she abided, being faithful in the duties which fell to her lot.
She was an unassuming, home loving woman with unbounded hospitality. Her helpful disposition endeared her to all who learned to know her, and the news of her departure brought expressions of regret from a large circle of friends. She has passed out of this life into a better home, but she will be sadly missed.
She leaves to mourn her departure a sorrowing husband, who will fell the loss of his helpful life companion; one daughter, Daisy E. at home, three sons, Capt. Thomas A. an attorney at law, of Charles City, Iowa; and John E. and Earl S. associated with their father on the home farm, all of whom have tenderly cared for her in last illness, and who will ever revere the name of “Mother.” Also three grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers; Mrs. L. M. Green, of Fayette, Iowa; Mrs. Ben Hartley and J. C. Bulman of Union City township; Thos. S. Bulman, of Yale, Oklahoma; and Mrs. W. W. Reburn, of McMinnville, Oregon, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Mt. Hope church Sunday afternoon, April 15, conducted by Rev. E. Butler, pastor of M. E. Church, Waukon. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery. The pall bearers were six nephews of the deceased. The singing was furnished by a quartette [sic] from the New Albin choir.
