WAUKON, Iowa – Services for Michael Baxter, 23 of Waukon will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church here. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Bakke-Hanson Funeral Home in Waukon, where the Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Baxter died Sunday morning as a result of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. He had been employed in the meat department of the Red Owl Grocery Store here.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Maxine Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Lynn (Patricia) Moody of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Mrs. Don (Donna) Ryan of Independence, Iowa; a brother, Donald of Waukon, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bresnahan of Waukon.

Carbon monoxide kills couple
HARPER'S FERRY, Iowa – A northeast Iowa couple engaged to be married were found in their parked car here yesterday morning, victims of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said.

The bodies of Michael Baxter, 23, of Waukon, Iowa and Karen Jean Schulte, 19, of Harper's Ferry were found about 9 a.m. in Miss Schulte's 1969 car, which was parked near Second and Chestnut streets here with the motor running, according to Allamakee County Sheriff Neil Becker.

Becker said the couple was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was listed as asphyxiation, he said.

The couple reportedly had been engaged for less than two weeks and had planned to marry in June, according to a family member.

Allamakee Couple Found Dead in Car
HARPERS FERRY – Two Allamakee county residents were found dead about 9 a.m. Sunday in a car which was parked along the Mississippi river.
The deaths of Karen Schulte, 19, Harpers Ferry, and Michael Baxter, 23, Waukon, were ruled accidental by authorities due to apparent asphyxiation from a faulty exhaust system.

An unidentified area resident found the bodies.
The couple had become formally engaged about one week ago and had planned to be married in June.

Karen Schulte was born July 5, 1956, in Harpers Ferry. She was educated in local schools and graduated from high school in 1974. She had been employed at Amana Refrigeration.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clem Schulte; four sisters, Mrs. Ron Feuerhelm, Lansing; Mrs. Bill Irons, Waukon, Jennie, Cedar Rapids; and Marita, at home; two brothers, Clem and Don, at home; and her grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Schulte.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 at St. Anne's Catholic church. Visitation Monday from 2:10 at St. Anne's annex. Rosary at 8 at Bakke-Hanson's.

Michael Francis Baxter was born March 16, 1953. He attended St. Patrick's senior high school, and was employed at Red Owl store in Waukon.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. John Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Lynn Moody, Pocahontas; and Mrs. Don Ryan, Independence; a brother, Don, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bresnahan, Waukon.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 at St. Patrick's church. Visitation from 2-10 Tuesday. Rosary 8 p.m. Bakke-Hanson's.
