Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa for James Edward Ewing, age 95, of Postville who died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. Rev. Gary Catterson officiated and interment was in the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.

James Edward "Jim" Ewing was born on June 6, 1917 on a farm in rural Allamakee County, Iowa to James "Edd" and Elizabeth "Liz" (Willis) Ewing. He was the youngest of five children and attended the Forest Mills Country School. After finishing the eighth grade he continued his education at the Waukon High School in Waukon, Iowa.

Jim was united in marriage to Doris "Mike" Bacon on August 26, 1936. They were the parents of four children. Jim farmed until he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. Following his stint in the army he worked as a mechanic, tried farming once again then started his own business as a mechanic in Rossville, Iowa. After losing their home to a fire, in 1959 Jim and Mike moved to Postville, Iowa and resided at 228 West Murdock Street for forty-five years. During his time in Postville, Jim worked for the Ford Dealership and Cook's Shell Service Station as a mechanic. Later he would work for eighteen years at the Allamakee-Clayton REC as a boom truck driver until his retirement. Following retirement, Jim mowed lawn and blew snow for many people in the community.

Living on the north side of town, Jim felt that the voice of the people residing there was not being heard. He remedied that by running for the city council. Jim lost during his first campaign but found success the second time he ran. He served on the city council 1982-1984 and also served as the mayor of Postville from 1984-1988. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, fixing bicycles for people and loved gardening. He was an active Masons member with Brotherly Love Lodge #204 AF & AM, Eastern Star, Amvets, and the American Legion where he served as Commander. Jim was a fifty year plus member of the Postville Community Presbyterian Church. During that time he served as a deacon and elder. He was active on the church session at age 84 when many people retire from that responsibility.

James Edward Ewing was a man well-liked by many people in Postville and beyond. More importantly he was loved by his wife Mike of Postville; his four children: Bonnie Stee of Castalia, Gary (Betty) Ewing of McFarland, Wisconsin, Linda (David) Schierholz of Postville, and Lyle (Teresa) Ewing of Auburn, Indiana; Jim is survived by twenty eight grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Jimmy".

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Liz Ewing; one sister Florence Roffman and her husband Earl; three brothers Lawrence Ewing and his wife Cybil, Larry Ewing and his wife Bessie, George Ewing and his wife Bertha; a sister-in-law Lois Hagensick and her husband Joe; a sister-in-law Leone Gruber and her husband Merle; a granddaughter Lisa Ewing; a great-grandson Anthony Schierholz; a son-in-law Merle Stee, Jr. and a daughter-in-law Charlotte Ewing.
