Rev. Joseph H. Cavanaugh CSC, head of the Department of Religion at the University of Notre Dame, died early today, November 11, 1954, in the Student Infirmary on the campus. Father Cavanaugh was rector of Morrissey Hall until he became ill last spring. Funeral services for Rev. Joseph H. Cavanaugh CSC were held in the Sacred Heart Church on campus on Monday, November 15, 1954. The University President, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh CSC officiated and burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Notre Dame, South Bend,Indiana.

Rev. Joseph Hubert Cavanaugh was born in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. He entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 1934 and made his final profession six years later. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1940 and was ordained in the Sacred Heart Church on the Notre Dame campus June 24, 1944. After his ordination, Father Cavanaugh studied at Laval University, Quebec City, Province of Quebec, Canada. He joined the faculty of Notre Dame's religion department in the fall of 1945 and in succeeding years taught many religious courses. He was named head of the Department in 1952. He is the author of "Evidence for Our Faith" published by the Notre Dame Press in 1949.

Father Cavanaugh is survived by two brothers and eight sisters including Sister Joan Marie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Joseph H. Cavanaugh was the son of Thomas Charles Cavanaugh (1879-1945) and Elizabeth Mary "Bessie"(Guthneck) Cavanaugh (1877-1922) of Harpers Ferry, Iowa. They were the parents of 6 children. When Joseph was five and a half years old, his mother died on May 12, 1922. On November 28, 1923 his father remarried to Alberta Marcella Melavin, who was the niece of his wife Elizabeth. Alberta was the daughter of Elizabeth's older sister, Josephine (Guthneck) and Peter F. Melavin. Alberta was the step-mother to Joseph and the older children. The baby, Mary Irene Cavanaugh, was eleven months old when her mother died. She was raised by her Aunt Josephine Melavin. Thomas and Alberta would have six more children born to their marriage.The Cavanaugh children born in the 1st marriage were:
