Pioneer Mother Dies At Age Of 80 Years

The death of Mrs. Margaret Ward occurred Monday at her home near Lycurgus following a several months illness from the infirmities of age.

Margaret Shortt was a native of Ireland, where she was born about 80 years ago. She came to this country with her parents when a young girl and after attaining womanhood was united in marriage with Thomas Ward. They were the parents of 13 children, five of whom preceded their mother in death. Those who survive are Patrick, George, Leo and Miss Margaret at home; Thomas residing in the same vicinity; Mrs. G. G. Monroe, Cherry Mound; Mrs. T. D. Rice, Elma, Iowa, and John R. Ward of Sask., Canada, who mourn the loss of a dear mother. There are also 14 grandchild, four great grandchildren and a brother, Patrick Shortt of Lycurgus.

Coming to Allamakee county as she did when this section of Iowa was in the pioneer stages, Mrs. Ward developed the generous hospitable instincts of her nature to a great degree and her home was always open to strangers as well as friends, all of whom she made welcome. Her life was one of service to others, her greatest joy being to minister to her loved ones.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Cath9lic church at Lycurgus, conducted by Rev. P. H. McNamara. Burial will be in the family lot beside her husband and loved ones gone before in the cemetery adjoining the church.
