Waukon Business Man Passes On
LIFELONG COUNTY RESIDENT IS PNEUMONIA VICTIM AT ROCHESTER HOSPITAL

William F. Fitzgerald, a well known business man of this city died at an early hour Sunday morning at St. Mary’s hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, following a short siege of pneumonia. Three months ago he received treatment at Rochester for rectal trouble which terminated in an incurable disease. Three weeks ago he returned to that city to undergo an operation. The preliminary work had been accomplished and ten days later he was to submit to the major operation, but contracted pneumonia and he was unable to rally sufficient strength to ward off the disease and death relieved him of his suffering.

Deceased, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Fitzgerald, was born in Union Prairie township August 1, 1878, his entire life having been spent in this vicinity. For 19 years he was employed by the late J. F. Dayton on his fruit farm in the north part of this city. Later he learned the plumber’s trade which he worked at during the remainder of his life.

He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Margaret Ryan to whom he was wed about 14 years ago. A child was born to this union, but passed away shortly after birth and he was also bereft of his wife by death in less than two years. In 1918 he was wedded to Miss Alma Garrow, who with their daughter Jean are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. He is also survived by a brother and three sisters, namely: Michael Fitzgerald, Mrs. James Foley of Waukon, Mrs. Robert Connor of Union Prairie, and Mrs. R. F. Buggy of Denver, Colorado.

In his quiet unassuming way Mr. Fitzgerald made many friends all through life, who valued him for his sincerity and uprightness, who extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones in their great sorrow.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks and Woodmen orders. The remains arrived here Sunday and were taken to the late home of deceased, and from there to St. Patrick’s church where funeral services were held Tuesday morning, conducted by Reverend John C. Stuart. Burial was in the family lot in Mount Olivet cemetery. The casket bearers were Alfred Barton, Charles Regan, Jr., Otto Hanson, Fred Ludeking, Frank Klees and P. J. Mahoney.
