A very sad death occurred at the mines near here Tuesday, November 19, 1918, when Mrs. Wes. Gale passed away at her home at abut 11:30 a.m. after an illness of abut two weeks from influenza. The family have all had the disease but all were in rather a light form except the mother, who seemed in a serious condition from the start. Maria Thompson was born in Montgomery County, Iowa on November 19, 1884. When but a small child he moved with her parents to Adams County, and at the age of 16 she was married to J. W. Gale. To this union six children were born, one dying in infancy and the other five, Ruby, Ruth, Earl, Blanche, and Ethel, are all at home. Besides the husband and children, she leaves to mourn her loss her aged father, Mr. Thompson of Briscoe, two sisters and four brothers, namely Mrs. Etta Dewees and Mrs. Minnie Townsend both of Corning, Roy, John, and Cub Thompson of Briscoe, and Ed Thompson of Carbon. Short funeral services were said by Rev. Ivan R. Mills at the home at 12 o’clock Wednesday and another short service at the grave in Oakland Cemetery at Quincy, Iowa, where interment was made beside her child. Mrs. Gale was of a quiet, retiring nature and only those closely associated with her could appreciate her nobility and kindness of hear. She was a splendid wife and mother, having constantly in mind the welfare of her husband and children. Her departure will be felt in her home and among friends. The people of the community sympathize with the family in their great bereaved event.
