Vernon and Mary Ellen (Wagner) Anderson were married May 7, 1940, at St. John's Catholic Church in Greenfield, Iowa. They resided on farms all their married life, the last in Eureka Township, Adair County.

Their children were Richard 1940, Mary 1945, Jerry 1949,David 1951 and Kay 1957. One son Leo Carl, 1953, died in infancy. Mary, Jerry, David and Kay are married. There are nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Vernon's parents are Carl and Cora (Frank)Scott Anderson. Their ancestry was Danish. The Anderson name was originally spelled with an "e" instead of "o". When John Anderson came to the United States (approximately 1881) some official misspelled his name and so he continued with the "o". Vernon has a half-brother, Lawrence Scott.

Mary Ellen's parents were Leo and Lura (Nelson) Wagner. They were farmers in Adair County and spent their last years living in Greenfield. Leo worked for Schildberg Constructions Company before his retirement. Mary Ellen's and brother was Martin Wagner and sisters were Alice Griswold (deceased), Wilma Fagan, Cleo Gipple and Gertude Langlet. Leo's ancestry was Irish-German. Lura was French, Pennsylvania Dutch and Scottish (or English).

Mary Ellen was a stay-at-home mom, raising chickens, gardens, helping with the farm chores, cooking and housekeeping. Her birth date is December 23, 1920.

Vernon enjoyed farming, raising livestock and repairing his machinery. His hobby was fishing.

In their running-around days, they enjoyed dancing. Vernon's birth date was November 20, 1914.

They enjoyed their children and their school activities, and were proud to see them all graduate from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 6, 1990.

Vernon passed away June 1996 and was buried at the Fontanelle Cemetery.
