WAYNE AND RUTH ABBOTT

Wayne Elmer Abbott was born to Sarah and Elmer Abbott April 5, 1922, on a farm in Union County, Iowa. The family later moved to rural Greenfield.

Ruth Bolger and her twin sister, Ruby, were born to Perry and Sarah "Sadie" Bolger December 11, 1923, on a farm near Greenfield. The day Ruth and Ruby were born the family had a sale in preparation for their move to Greenfield.

Wayne and Ruth went through Greenfield High School together. On April 4, 1942 (Wayne's birthday and Easter Sunday), they and his brother, Roland, and wife Lorrene went to Cameron, Missouri, where Wayne and Ruth exchanged wedding vows. They kept their marriage a secret until after their graduation.

Wayne was sworn into the U.S. Army October 12, 1942, at Camp Dodge. He went to Camp Barkley, Texas. In June 1943, he went to Australia and then to New Guinea and later to Leyte Island in the Philippines. He served in the 117th Station Hospital Division as a medic. He received his honorable discharge December 30, 1945, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

While Wayne was in the Army, Ruth worked at the Grand Theatre in Greenfield.

Wayne became a resident engineer, working for an engineering firm out of Davenport, Iowa. He started his career in Greenfield area for the REA. This career led into his working for the telephone companies.

They lived in mobile homes and moved wherever Wayne's jobs took them.

Daughter Jayne was born in Greenfield March 29, 1957. She married Tim Yanriska July 3, 1982. Their son, Jerry, was born at Brooklyn, Iowa, December 13, 1958. Jerry married Denise Farr October 7, 1995.

Wayne retired from Universal Telephone Company in April 1987, while living in Frederic, Wisconsin. In 1991 they made their 37th move to their present home in New Hampton, Iowa. They chose this location to be centrally located with their loved ones. Wayne loves woodworking and enjoys making decorative items. Both usually ride bikes five miles daily, Wayne's regular and Ruth's stationary.
