Black Hawk County was
created when its boundaries were established on February 1843 by an act of the Territorial
Legislature of Iowa at which time it was attached to Delaware County for judicial and
revenue purposes. It was attached to Benton Co. on January 17, 1853 the General
Assembly appointed three commissioners to locate and establish a county seat. By
the same act Bremer, Butler and Grundy counties were attached to Black Hawk.
Cedar Falls, then a village, was selected for the county seat on June 9, 1854 while Black
Hawk was organized as a county in its own right on 17 August 1853.
