Family
Discoveries & Stories

Do you have a family story that you would like to share? Or perhaps you have found some interesting items that you feel would like to find their way home?

Lisa Wideman Showers, Missouri
I have several stories passed through the years that I have documented about the Livingston, Savage, Nichols, Rexstrew, Wideman (Whiteman), and Ackerson families. However, the one that I am sending today is about my father's step-father's family. Thomas "Howard" Anderson married my grandmother, Eleanor Savage Wideman in 1920 after the death of Alfred Wideman, my grandfather. According to my mother, now deceased, Howard's parents died while he was young and he was raised by the Fisk family of Cedar Falls. Apparently, the Fisk family took in orphans, regardless of race, and raised them as their own. When my parents passed away, I received the Fisk family Bible. I would like to get this Bible to someone who would be in direct line to them. It contains family information about their family including marriage, birth and death records. I don't know if any of this would be possible, but I know that I would cherish having this item. The Fisk family were obviously very kind and generous people, and I believe that they had children of their own.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Set(?) SKINNER & Family (father, mother, and two children) taken at the Hoot Studio in Waterloo, Iowa. The first name of the father isn't clear, it could be Seth. The photo was likely taken in the 1880's when the parents were about 30 years old and the children were 3-7 years old. The oldest child appears to be a girl and the
youngest may be a boy, though it is hard to tell for sure.

In addition to this photo I also obtained a photo of Ms. Ena BARTHLETT of Glenville, Minnesota from the same source. It appears that both photos were removed from the same family photograph album and may well be relatives. I'm hoping to return the photograph to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
