Janet Louise Whitworth Shorten

Janet Louise Whitworth Shorten ... died on the morning of September 25, 2007, ... in Orem UT. Janet was born June 30, 1946 in South English, Iowa to John and Alene (Robison) Whitworth who have preceded her in death. She grew up on a farm near Blairstown, Iowa.

She graduated Salutatorian from Blairstown High School in 1964, and enrolled in State College of Iowa, now University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1968. She joined the United States Navy in 1968, and was commissioned an Ensign, USNR, after graduating from Women's Officer School, Naval Station, Newport, RI.

She was the first woman officer assigned to VT-21, an advanced jet training squadron for pilots, as Educational Services Officer at NAS Kingsville, TX. While in Kingsville she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on her 24th Birthday, 1970. While on active duty, she met and later married David R. Shorten...

They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 26, 1971, and made their home in Orem shortly thereafter. She attended Brigham Young University while courting. Later, she and her husband earned Executive MPA degrees in 1980. She is the mother of three children, Michal Alene Shorten, of Provo; David George Shorten and Sarajan Shorten of Orem.

She remained in the Naval Reserve attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander at retirement. She .. serving in the Young Women's Association, Relief Society, as Activities Chairman, Organist and at the time of her death, Ward Music Director...

She is survived by her family, and sister Mrs. Cathy (Terry) McCool of Minneapolis, MN....

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Timpanogos Park 6th Ward Chapel, 955 North 300 East, Orem. Friends may call Friday evening, at the Berg Mortuary of Orem, 500 North State Street, from 6-8 p.m., or Saturday morning, at the Ward Chapel, one hour prior to services. Interment, Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, 1000 North 400 East, Orem. Full military honors will be accorded by the VFW #4...
