The P. M. Coder post was named in honor of veteran Philip M. Coder who died at Vinton, Iowa on January 2, 1881. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.

The post was chartered September 21, 1882 and was disbanded December 31, 1935. The post had 24 charter members and a total of 329 members.
