SPENCER'S GROVE CHURCH
Excerpt fron the History of Benton County, Iowa, 1988
compiled by the Historical Society Book Committee
Polk Township, section 2.

The Union Society (organize in 1859) built the church building in 1861 and reorganized their society to become the Union Free-Will Baptist Church. Because of dwindling membership, the Baptists shared the church building with the Methodists between the years of 1878 and 1903. In 1903 arrangements were made to deed the property to the Methodist Church. The present church building, dedicated 11 October 1905 was begun in 1903. Services were held in Spencer's Grove for more than 80 years, first in the old Baptist Church, then in the present Methodist Church building. The church building is no longer in use, but is being kept in repair by local societies, groups, and funds from pioneer descendants.
